Resistance often appears right before transformation. It’s that tension we feel when stepping into uncertainty—when growth is possible but uncomfortable. Rather than seeing it as an obstacle, we can recognize resistance as a guide toward greater clarity, confidence, and expansion.
The Role of Resistance
In coaching sessions, I witness resistance arise at pivotal moments. It signals an unconscious reason that brought my client to coaching—a belief or fear ready to be explored. My role isn’t to push past it but to meet it with curiosity, helping them navigate through it.
This practice isn’t just for coaching; it applies to all of us. I’ve learned through meditation and self-inquiry that resistance isn’t the enemy—it’s the doorway to growth.
What Resistance Feels Like
Resistance can show up as:
- Defensiveness or needing to be right.
- Hesitation, fear, or tightness in the body.
- A reluctance to embrace a new idea.
Instead of avoiding or suppressing it, we can invite resistance in, sit with it, and explore its message.
The Invitation: Dance with Resistance
Next time you feel resistance, try this:
- Pause and notice what’s happening in your body and mind.
- Get curious. What belief or fear is underneath this?
- Stay with it. Breathe. Let it be present without judgment.
- Find the lesson. What growth opportunity is hidden here?
On the other side of resistance is often clarity, freedom, and transformation.
Resistance as a Doorway
When we meet our own resistance with awareness, we also hold space for others—whether in relationships, work, or personal growth. Instead of reacting, we can listen, create understanding, and foster collaboration.
Resistance isn’t a block; it’s a bridge. The next time you feel it, step in. Dance with it. See where it leads.
